Privacy Policy
Last updated: 8 October 2026
This policy explains what personal data the Marry Abroad app and website collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it and the rights you have. We have tried to write it in plain language.
1. Who we are
Marry Abroad ("we", "us") is a business based in the United Kingdom and is the data controller for your personal data.
Address: Nottingham, United Kingdom
Email: support@marryabroad.app
2. What we collect
| Data | Details |
|---|---|
| Account details | Email address and mobile number, each confirmed with a one-time code. Login sessions. |
| Profile | Name, gender, age, what you are looking for, marital status, height, body type, ethnicity, education, work, profession, lifestyle (diet, smoking, drinking, exercise, pets), children, marriage plans, personality, zodiac sign, interests, languages, "about me", country, state and city, city type, salary band (or "prefer not to say"), living and housing situation, and partner preferences. |
| Photos and voice | Your profile photos and an optional voice note. These are shown to other members. |
| Live selfie | A selfie taken during sign-up to confirm a real person is creating the account. It is encrypted and never shown on your profile. |
| ID check (optional) | If you choose to get verified: the type and number of your government ID, date of birth, photos of the document and a selfie, which we compare with each other. For Indian Aadhaar we only keep the last 4 digits and a masked copy. |
| Honest disclosure | Your answers about previous marriages, criminal convictions, protection orders, visa sponsorships and where you want to live. |
| US disclosure (IMBRA) | US citizens and permanent residents who connect with a member outside the US must complete a background disclosure required by US law, and we run a US sex-offender registry search. |
| Activity in the app | Proposals, messages, shortlists, blocks, reports, support tickets, suggestions and purchases. |
| Usage analytics (optional) | Only if you turn it on: which screens you view, which buttons and options you choose, and how long sessions last. Never the text you type, your messages or ID details. |
| Technical data | IP address, device type and app version, used for security, preventing abuse and fixing problems. |
3. Why we use it, and our legal basis
- To provide the service (contract): creating your account, showing your profile, matching, proposals, chat and purchases.
- To keep members safe (legitimate interests and legal obligations): checking that accounts are real, preventing fraud and scams, investigating reports, removing members who break the rules and stopping them from returning, warning about messages that ask for money or contact details.
- To meet legal requirements (legal obligation): age limits, the US International Marriage Broker Regulation Act, consumer law, tax and accounting records, and requests from authorities where the law requires it.
- Special category and criminal-offence data (your explicit consent): ethnicity, face comparison of your selfie and ID, and the criminal-conviction answers in your disclosures. You give this consent separately in the app and can withdraw it by deleting the information or your account.
- Usage analytics (your consent): optional, off unless you turn it on, and changeable at any time in Settings > Privacy & data.
We do not sell your personal data and we do not use it for advertising.
4. Who can see your information
- Other members see your profile and photos, but never your email, mobile number, live selfie or ID documents. Members in your own country do not see you, and members you block cannot see you.
- Your disclosures are only shown to members you exchange proposals with, and at the top of your chat.
- Service providers that work for us under contract: Render (hosting, United States), Postmark (email delivery, United States), and, once connected, providers for text messages, identity and liveness checks, and registry searches. Purchases are handled by Apple and Google, under their own privacy policies.
- Authorities, when the law requires it, or to protect someone from serious harm.
5. International transfers
Some of our providers are outside the UK and the European Economic Area. When your data is transferred, we rely on safeguards approved under UK and EU law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.
6. How long we keep it
| Data | Kept for |
|---|---|
| Account, profile, photos, messages | Until you delete your account. |
| ID check documents and details | One year after the check is decided, then deleted. |
| Usage analytics | Up to 13 months, then deleted. |
| Members removed for breaking the rules | ID documents and selfie for up to five years, and a one-way coded fingerprint of the ID number after that, so the same person cannot open a new account. |
| Reports made by or about you | As long as needed to protect members and handle complaints. |
| Purchase records | As long as UK tax law requires (normally six years). |
7. How we protect it
All connections use HTTPS. ID documents and selfies are encrypted when stored. Access to the admin dashboard needs an individual password and an authenticator code, and every time someone views an ID image or reads a message for moderation it is recorded in an audit log.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023) you can ask to:
- get a copy of your data (Settings > Privacy & data > Request a copy);
- correct it (Edit profile, or contact us);
- delete it (Settings > Privacy & data > Delete account, or see Delete your account);
- restrict or object to how we use it, or withdraw any consent you gave.
Email support@marryabroad.app for anything else. We reply within one month. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) or the data protection authority where you live.
9. Age limit
Marry Abroad is only for adults: 18 or over, and 21 or over for men living in India. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone younger, and we delete any account we find that breaks this rule.
10. Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and, for important changes, tell you in the app before they take effect.
